RENOVATING THE HEART OF THE HOME

There is a saying, ‘The kitchen is the heart of the home’. Is your heart in the right place and ready for a makeover?

Home renovations have been increasing in number with the financial rise in the home building industry over the last two years. According to an article published by the National Home Builders Association in April 2015, kitchen and bathroom remodels lead the renovation/remodel industry. When deciding to remodel your kitchen there are several factors to consider before taking the proverbial plunge, and determining a budget should be at the top of your list before moving forward with any project.

Choosing a professional to bring your vision to life is next. “Choose a team of professionals that you can trust,” recommends Allison Martin with Carolinas Custom Kitchen & Bath. “Many people can design a great kitchen, but you need to trust that the execution is handled properly.”

“Rely on the professional. Don’t be afraid to share your budget with the industry professional,” she continued.  “Style and function are keys to a successful renovation, and the contractor can best achieve those goals to suit your budget only if they actually know what that amount is. We’ve all been in the “champagne budget / beer pocketbook position. Your designer wants to put all of their knowledge to use in order to get your dream kitchen at a price you feel comfortable with.”

Whether working with a designer or creating your own wish list, consider a style that works not only for you but flows with your entire home.

“Don’t be afraid to entertain an entirely new kitchen footprint,” said Martin. “Always consider the ‘focal point’. This area is typically the first wall you see when you enter the kitchen. Embrace that wall and put a twist on it that makes it yours. At the end of the project, you want to know that your money was well spent to create the kitchen that works best for you.”

And finally, evaluate how you use your kitchen.  Know what you want and how you want to use your kitchen.  Counter space, storage space, seating, appliances and lighting all need to be taken into consideration. Factor in utilizing renewable and energy efficient products or perhaps incorporating today’s technology into yesterday’s functionality.

Some great resources to help with the planning and preparation of your kitchen renovation include Houzz and Pinterest and a plethora of other websites.  Talk to your local kitchen retailer and suppliers or consult with a designer to help you along the way.
